Big Beauty Trends for 2019: We'll be fighting pollution via the skin microbiome

Global pollution is a real problem. It’s not just a problem for breathing as you might expect. Our skin is absorbing this pollution so we’re taking in the pollution via our lungs and skin. The beauty world is working towards protecting our skin and bodies against this pollution.

Dr. Justine Kluk, consultant dermatologist for 25 Harley Street says ‘we can expect to see more use of good bacteria in order to optimize immune functioning of the skin.’ She goes on to predict probiotics in skincare and even goes on to say that they will be more personalized and therefore, more effective.

Sarah Chapman, celebrity facialist and founder of Sarah Chapman Skinesis, says microbiota-balancing actives in skincare will be key to targeting pollution concerns. She goes on to say that pollution is a well-known aggressor and has been linked to people who suffer from sensitivity. Additionally, it’s been linked to premature aging. “Microbiota-balancing actives derived from yeast can rebalance our skin’s immune system and boost the natural defence barrier, so they are an interesting innovation to look out for.”
