Is The Cold Weather Bad For My Hair?

Is The Cold Weather Bad For My Hair?

Winter is approaching and living in Colorado, you’ve surely experienced dry and cracking skin in the winter months. But did you know that the cold weather is also hard on your hair? With these easy tips, you can keep your hair healthy this winter.

Hydrate and Moisturize

It’s important to stay hydrated. If you’re not already drinking the recommended 8 glasses of water per day, you might want to make a concerted effort to work toward that goal. Staying hydrated will help keep your skin, hair, and nails healthy. Additionally, just as you might apply extra moisturizer in the colder months, you’ll also want to ensure your hair is getting plenty of moisturizer. Leave in conditioners and Elixir Ultime oil by Kérastase are great additions to your hair regimen. You may even consider getting a few professional deep conditioning treatments.

Keep those products on-hand

The winter months can provide for brutal winds. And even the best products can’t protect your hair from them. You can have your hair perfectly in order when you leave the house, but that darn wind can have you feeling like Dorothy and leave you with a tangled up mess! Then when you go to brush out the tangles, your hair inevitable will break off leaving you with damaged ends. One way to fight this mess is by carrying around a travel size hairspray or smoothing serum. This will help you keep your hair tame and in order to combat the troublesome wind!

Don’t skip your trims

It can be easy to forget to make your hair appointment with the holidays and everything that goes into preparing for them. That being said, you want to get your regular trims and cuts to get rid of dead ends and keep your hair healthy and growing. While you may way 8 weeks for your trims in the warmer months, we recommend no more than 6 weeks in the colder months.

Skip the heat

No one appreciates a good blowout as much as we do. That being said, if you’re not leaving the house, or you don’t have any plans for the day, skip the hot blow dryer and irons and throw your locks up into a messy bun or in a pretty braid. Give your hair a break once in a while and this will help keep it healthy, as well as, fight static electricity. If you are a regular blow drying gal, then we suggest using a heat protectant. One of Kérastase's thermiques are a great choice!

Shampoo and Conditioner

If you aren’t already using a revitalizing shampoo and conditioner, now is a good time to make the switch. If you put lightener or color in your hair, then consider a color-restoring shampoo and conditioner. If you have damaged hair, Kérastase has a number of products that help with different types of hair and our stylist are happy to talk to you about your hair and give you a recommendation.

We know it can be rough on your hair getting through the winter months, but hopefully, with these tips, you’ll get through it more easily! We’re always here to help if you have any questions or want any specific help.
