6 Tips to Avoid Dry Hair This Winter

6 Tips to Avoid Dry Hair This Winter

Last week we talked about what causes dry scalp and how to resolve it and avoid it. We only thought it fitting, with the season, to discuss how to avoid dry hair this winter. With all of the events coming up, we know you want to look your best. Read on for 6 tips to avoid dry hair this winter.

Shampoo

It’s important to choose a shampoo that is compatible with your hair type. For example, if you’re blonde, you’ll want a shampoo like Kerastaé’s Blond Absolu line. It’s specifically formulated to protect the color and make up of your hair. Additionally, if you have curly hair, then you’ll want Kerastaé’s Discipline line. Whatever you choose, just be sure to go with a higher end product because this is definitely an area that you don’t want to skimp on.

Shampoo Sparingly

While cleansing your hair is an important step in maintaining your hair this winter, be sure not to do so too much. Over-shampooing your hair can really dry it out, which will only exacerbate a dry hair issue. Thus, if you don’t already incorporate dry shampoo as a part of your hair regimen, we highly recommend you try it. It may be hard at first, but the more consistent you are with it, the better your hair will be at understanding how often it needs to make oil and it will even out over time.

Condition/Moisturize

If you’re cleansing, then you need to condition/moisturize. Again, we’ll go back to our recommendation with the shampoo. The same is true for your moisturizer. Be sure to choose one that is specifically made for your hair type. Additionally, if your hair is especially dry and needs an extra boost, we recommend Kerastaé’s Nutritive 8H Magic Night Serum. This works well with straight and curly hair; as well as, all hair textures.

Comb/Brush Carefully

If you missed our last post about dry scalp, then we’ll cover it again here. Regular brushing is important for your hair. It will stimulate blood flow, which keeps the scalp healthy. Additionally, be sure to be careful when combing and brushing your hair. If you’re already struggling with dry hair, then it’s going to be more likely to break off during this process. Something you may not be accustomed to is combing your hair before washing it. However, we recommend doing this as it is harder to comb tangled hair. Further, a wide tooth comb or a brush that is specifically designed to gently detangle hair is recommended, such as wet brushes.

Dry Gently

You might be asking yourself “what does it mean to dry gently?” Or maybe you assume that drying gently refers to air drying and skipping the heat. Rather, we just want to warn against aggressive towel drying as this process can cause more breakage. Instead, squeeze as much water from your hair as you can.

Skip the Heat

Here’s the part where we say to skip the heat, when you can. We know you’ve got lots of places to be this time of year, parties and such. So for those occasions, you’re probably going to need to use a blow dryer. See our last post on recommendations on which ones are most efficient and least damaging. That being said, if you don’t have something to get all prettied up for, then skip the blow drying and allow your hair to air dry. Even better, skip the hot irons and curlers, as well.

Alright, you should feel pretty well informed to head into winter. Between last week’s post on dry scalp and this one on dry hair, we hope we’ve prepared you well. If you’re feeling like you could use a little more, schedule a deep conditioner with your hair stylist to help give you that extra protection for this season.
