Causes and Remedies of Dry Scalp

Causes and Remedies of Dry Scalp

It’s that time of year again. The holidays are upon us, but so is the cold, dry weather. You may already be suffering from dry scalp, maybe you’re itching your scalp as we speak. Have no fear, we’ve got you covered. Whether you suffer from dandruff or just regular old run of the mill dry scalp, here are some easy steps you can do at home to follow to get rid of dry scalp.

Dandruff

If you’re dealing with a dandruff problem, then you likely have tried various hair products that claim to fix the problem. Dandruff is just dry flakey skin or oily skin from the scalp that flakes off and usually sets up camp in your hair. This can be exaggerated in the winter as all of your skin feels dry. Your scalp needs extra moisturizer in the winter, as well. One of the most basic ways to combat dandruff is by brushing your hair regularly. This may sound silly, but regular brushing of the hair increases blood flow to the scalp, which helps facilitate the normal shedding of skin.

Causes

There are a number of things that can cause dry scalp. Overwashing can be a cause. If you’re shampooing too frequently, this can cause dry scalp. Another possible cause is using the wrong hair products. If you haven’t tried Kérastase’s Fusio Scrubs yet, you should! These are deep cleansing scalp scrubs formulated to deeply remove sebum, pollution particles, product build-up and impurities for a healthy scalp & beautiful hair.

Home Remedies

There are also some things you can do at home to help your dry scalp dilemma.

Baking Soda scrub: baking soda is a natural antiseptic. It also helps balance the pH levels of the scalp. Baking soda will also help remove excess oils and purge grease, both of which contribute to dandruff.

Apple Cider Vinegar flush: you may have already heard of the amazing miracles Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) can do for your body, and your hair and scalp are no exceptions. ACV has probiotic and anti-inflammatory properties that kill viruses and shed yeast from the scalp that contribute to itchiness. Further, the high acidity makes it difficult for dandruff causing bacteria and fungus to grow. Lastly, ACV functions as a conditioner, as well. It soothes the scalp and adds shine to your hair.

Lemon Juice treatment: At this point you may be wondering if you should be washing your hair in the kitchen rather than the bathroom. But lemons also have antiseptic properties. Like ACV, the acid in lemon juice helps control the pH levels in the scalp. And like ACV, it also destroys dandruff causing bacteria and fungus. One draw back to lemon juice is that it’s a temporary fix as the pH levels change in your scalp.

Avocados: Yep, still in the kitchen. Avocados are a great moisturizer. Which is helpful for an itchy scalp, it also will help with inflammation. Avocados are also rich with antioxidants, keeping skin healthy.

Tea Tree Oil: tea tree oil is an amazing essential oil! It has natural anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties.
